چکیده

Successfully predicting the frequency dispersion of electronic hyperpolarizabilities is an unresolved challenge in materials science and electronic structure theory. We show that the generalized Thomas-Kuhn sum rules, combined with linear absorption data and measured hyperpolarizability at one or two frequencies, may be used to predict the entire frequency-dependent electronic hyperpolarizability spectrum. This treatment includes twoand three-level contributions that arise from the lowest two or three excited electronic state manifolds, enabling us to describe the unusual observed frequency dispersion of the dynamic hyperpolarizability in high oscillator strength M-PZn chromophores, where (porphinato)zinc(II) (PZn) and metal(II)polypyridyl (M) units are connected via an ethyne unit that aligns the high oscillator strength transition dipoles of these components in a head-to-tail arrangement. We show that some of these structures can possess very similar linear absorption spectra yet manifest dramatically different frequency-dependent hyperpolarizabilities, because of three-level contributions that result from excited state-to-excited state transition dipoles among charge polarized states. Importantly, this approach provides a quantitative scheme to use linear optical absorption spectra and very limited individual hyperpolarizability measurements to predict the entire frequency-dependent nonlinear optical response.

Large Hyperpolarizabilities at Telecommunication-Relevant Wavelengths in Donor–Acceptor–Donor Nonlinear Optical Chromophores

Octopolar D2-symmetric chromophores, based on the MPZnM supermolecular motif in which (porphinato)zinc(II) (PZn) and ruthenium(II) polypyridyl (M) structural units are connected via ethyne linkages, were synthesized. These structures take advantage of electron-rich meso-arylporphyrin or electron-poor meso-(perfluoroalkyl)porphyrin macrocycles, unsubstituted terpyridyl and 4'-pyrrolidinyl-2,2';6...

Exact Fundamental Limits of the First and Second Hyperpolarizabilities.

Nonlinear optical interactions of light with materials originate in the microscopic response of the molecular constituents to excitation by an optical field, and are expressed by the first (β) and second (γ) hyperpolarizabilities. Upper bounds to these quantities were derived seventeen years ago using approximate, truncated state models that violated completeness and unitarity, and far exceed t...

Optical Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rules.

The Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule is a fundamental consequence of the position-momentum commutation relation for an atomic electron and it provides an important constraint on the transition matrix elements for an atom. Analogously, the commutation relations for the electromagnetic field operators in a magnetodielectric medium constrain the properties of the dispersion relations for the medium thr...

Absorption of DCM Dye in Ethanol: Experimental and Time Dependent Density Functional Study

Experimental and theoretical absorption spectra of [2-[2-[4-(dimethylamino) phenyl]ethenyl]-6-methyl-4H- pyran-4-ylidene]-propanedinitrile (DCM) have been studied. UV-Visible (UV-Vis.) absorption spectrum of DCM has been reported after its synthesis. Two relatively intense peaks appeared at 473 and 362 nm respectively. A theoretical investigation on the electronic structure of DCM is presented ...
